For the past few days, the most frequent phrase that I heard is “flatten the curve”. Everybody is doing their best, trying to improve the current situation. The current April issue of Maclean’s has a frightening headline “China’s efforts to stop the coronavirus have failed. Experts now say it could infect more than half the population. Are you ready for this?” It does sound scary. Well, I read that article, the content isn’t like anything new, mostly recap stuff from TV and other media. Till close to the end of the article, it says that some adviser estimated 2/3 of the population would get the virus. Yeah right, that sounds helpful.
Many people complain about the shortage of toilet paper and other household essential items. Over the weekend, we tried to do some shopping at the nearby Walmart and Longo. At Walmart, many shelves were empty. Many customers were taking photos of empty shelves. There were so many shoppers but so little supplies, that’s sad. It’s like the world is coming to an end, or alien is coming. Later, we tried Longo, and it’s a bit better. Although there was still worry on everyone’s faces, people look more calm and friendly. At the meat department, there was no chicken, but there were plenty of turkey breasts. One employee there suggested that the next item to be sold out would be eggs. Well, eggs aren’t something you can stock a lot.
Where to buy toilet paper? Both Walmart and Longo already ran out of those. There was one place that still got plenty, that was Canadian Tire. Of course, all name-brand ones were not available. This branch carried a brand called “April Soft”; we have never heard of that. Later we searched on the Internet; we still couldn’t find its manufacturer website. Where are they made? Nowadays, many people got scammed online, they tried to buy face mask online, and received recycled ones instead. How could face mask be reused? That’s absurd. Paying big bucks and purchase something useless is a pity. Last night, we did some food shopping at a nearby Food Basic. That wasn’t too bad; you could still get meat, vegetables and the basics. Just that for some household items, you can now only purchase two pieces at a time.
For those who still need to go out, you can see that the roads have fewer cars unquestionably. It seems nice to drive with fewer cars, but the mood is heavy. Not many pedestrians on the streets, not many passengers on the streetcars, it’s all like a dead city. Some experts suggest that this epidemic thing would last for months, let’s keep on social distancing, and this horrendous virus will phase out sooner than we expected.
