Vitamin C & Lysine

Recently, I saw a supplements ad about vitamin C and lysine. I bet many people know about vitamins, but what about lysine. I, for one, am not familiar with lysine. I would like to know more about that, and here is what I found:

Is it safe to take lysine supplements?

While lysine in the diet is considered safe, excessive doses may cause gallstones. There have also been reports of renal dysfunction, including Fanconi syndrome and renal failure. Talk to your doctor before taking supplemental lysine if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. <- Oh, so not everyone can take it.

What are the side effects of lysine?

GI adverse reactions, such as diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain, have been reported with lysine ingestion. A case report described the development of the kidney disorders Fanconi syndrome and tubulointerstitial nephritis associated with lysine supplementation taken over a 5-year period. <- Ok, definitely need to talk to a doctor before taking it.

What foods are high in lysine?

High lysine foods include lean beef, cheese, turkey, chicken, pork, soy, fish, shrimp, shellfish, nuts, seeds, eggs, beans, and lentils. <- Well, I guess I don’t need lysine supplements.
